The Adventures of Reza Shadey

Reza Shadey, a fluffy Persian cat character from The Adventures of Reza Shadey bedtime stories

Story 182: Reza Shadey and the Cat-Skinning Conspiracy

Okay, snuggle down tight, little ones. Let me tell you a tale about a very cheeky and magnificently fluffy Persian cat who overheard one innocent saying and immediately launched a full-scale neighbourhood defence operation — because to Reza Shadey, every idiom was a strategic intelligence briefing, and every casual conversation was a coded threat.

It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Catford. The bees were busy doing their important bee-business, the washing flapped gently on the line like polite little flags, and Mrs Higgins was enjoying a lovely chat over the garden fence with Mr Patel from number twenty-three.

Reza Shadey, perched regally on top of the garden wall like a furry CEO surveying his corporate kingdom, was conducting his Daily Perimeter Risk Assessment. This highly important exercise involved staring suspiciously at pigeons, judging the posture of passing squirrels, and mentally cataloguing everything that was wrong with the neighbourhood.

He was just about to file a formal complaint about the angle of next door's washing line when a single sentence drifted across the fence like an unexploded bomb.

"...and you know what they say", Mr Patel chuckled, "there's more than one way to skin a cat!"

Reza's emerald eyes grew as round as saucers.

His magnificent brown-and-black fur puffed up like a startled feather duster that had just received terrible news.

His ears flattened.

His tail gave one horrified twitch.

Skin a cat?

Multiple ways?

In his territory?

Reza's brain — a place of unstoppable ambition and highly selective reasoning — immediately began constructing an elaborate conspiracy.

He imagined shadowy figures with mysterious cat-skinning equipment.

He imagined secret organisations developing advanced proprietary techniques.

He imagined his own magnificent fluff...

He couldn't bear to imagine any further.

With a dramatic FWUMP!, he leapt from the wall and landed on the patio.

"Penelope! Tiger! Ginger Tom! Emergency board meeting! Code Fluff Red! This is not a drill!"

Penelope arrived first, her elegant white fur gleaming in the sunshine.

"Rezzi", she asked gently, "what's happened now? Have the squirrels formed a union?"

Tiger bounced in so enthusiastically that he knocked over a flowerpot.

"Is it aliens? Is it biscuits? Is it both?"

Ginger Tom wandered over last, stretching with a huge yawn.

"This better involve snacks, mate."

Reza sprang onto the patio table, tail lashing like a corporate gavel.

"Stakeholders", he announced gravely, "we face an existential threat. The neighbours have openly declared their intention to explore multiple methodologies for skinning cats. This is a coordinated assault on feline assets across the entire Catford region!"

Penelope blinked slowly.

"Rezzi... it's just an old saying. It means there's more than one way to do something."

"Exactly!" Reza cried triumphantly.

"Multiple ways! They could be spinning, stretching, or — heaven forbid — employing advanced proprietary techniques! We must mobilise immediately. Every cat's fluff is at stake!"

Tiger gasped.

"The fluff? Not the fluff! That's where the vibes live!"

"Precisely", nodded Reza. "The vibes are under direct threat."

Ginger Tom squinted at him.

"Mate... you've completely lost it."

"I have identified the threat and initiated a response protocol", Reza corrected. "There is a significant strategic difference."

Within minutes, Operation Feline Fortress was underway.

Reza appointed himself Chief Risk Officer and Supreme Defender of Fluff.

Tiger became Head of Kinetic Countermeasures.

"I'm gonna bounce the threat away!"

Ginger Tom was reluctantly promoted to Director of Snack Logistics.

"For morale purposes", explained Reza.

Penelope remained Chief of Diplomacy — mostly because somebody had to keep the meeting sensible.

Reza established his Secure Perimeter Command Post inside Mrs Higgins's old wheelbarrow, balanced a cardboard box on top, and began issuing orders through the handles.

"Our first defensive innovation", he declared, "is the Anti-Skinning Rotation Protocol. If we keep cats constantly moving, nobody can get a proper grip."

He gently took hold of Tiger, who assumed this was a wonderful new game, and gave him a careful spin across the lawn.

"Wheeeeeeee!" laughed Tiger, rolling through the grass like a furry tumbleweed.

"Elite vibes!"

Ginger Tom crunched thoughtfully on a biscuit.

"You're all barking mad."

"The rotation is working, Thomas!" Reza called proudly.

Soon the misunderstanding spread across the gardens.

Reza dictated urgent memos on the backs of old shopping lists using a piece of charcoal. Three rather nervous neighbourhood tabbies were recruited into the Rapid Response Fluff Division. Tiger bounced enthusiastically into bushes while everyone else stumbled over Reza's carefully positioned "strategic string barriers."

Penelope watched the chaos unfold.

"Rezzi", she said gently, "don't you think you might be overreacting just a tiny bit?"

"Overreacting?" gasped Reza.

"I have intelligence. I have data."

"What data?"

"I overheard it myself."

"That's not data, Rezzi."

"It's eavesdropping."

Reza adjusted his imaginary tie.

"Eavesdropping is market research."

Mrs Higgins came outside carrying her watering can.

She stopped.

Reza was standing on the overturned wheelbarrow, wearing a milk-bottle-ring monocle and addressing three tabbies, two puzzled robins and a thoroughly confused hedgehog.

"...therefore", he declared, "we must remain vigilant against all idioms! 'Curiosity killed the cat' is clearly a warning about investigative journalism! 'Let the cat out of the bag' is obviously an extraction protocol! We must decode every hidden meaning!"

"Reza Shadey", called Mrs Higgins, "what on earth are you doing?"

Reza spun round dramatically.

"Protecting operational assets, Beatrice! There are nefarious elements plotting multi-vector skinning operations! I have mobilised the Rapid Response Fluff Division!"

Mrs Higgins looked at Tiger.

"The what division?"

Tiger puffed out his little chest.

"I'm Head of Kinetic Countermeasures!"

"Bet!"

Just then Mr Patel wandered past again with his grandson.

The little boy pointed at the spinning, string-tangled cats and burst into laughter.

"Everything alright, Mrs Higgins?" Mr Patel called. "The cats seem a bit... energetic."

Mrs Higgins smiled.

"Oh, they're fine. Just having one of Reza's little games."

Reza smiled to himself.

Excellent.

The enemy has recognised our operational readiness.

Later that evening, a kindly lady from the RSPCA arrived after a concerned neighbour reported that several cats appeared to be spinning for reasons nobody could explain.

She found Reza standing proudly on the garden shed, explaining the importance of "pre-emptive fluff preservation."

After listening patiently, she smiled at Mrs Higgins.

"It sounds like he's misunderstood a common saying."

Mrs Higgins laughed softly.

"That sounds exactly like Reza."

She scooped him into her arms, brushing grass and bits of string from his magnificent fur.

"Oh, you silly sausage", she chuckled. "Mr Patel was only chatting. Nobody's skinning any cats."

Reza adjusted another imaginary tie.

"Precisely as I planned, Mrs Higgins. I initiated a full-spectrum readiness exercise. My leadership ensured zero successful skinning incidents."

"Mission accomplished."

Penelope smiled.

"Rezzi... there never was any threat."

Reza nodded wisely.

"Exactly."

"Because I neutralised it before it could materialise."

"That's called proactive leadership."

Tiger, still slightly dizzy from his rotational countermeasures, gave a wobbly thumbs-up.

"Best mission ever!"

Ginger Tom calmly helped himself to another biscuit.

"Whatever you say, boss."

Back inside, Mrs Higgins gently brushed the last bits of grass from Reza's magnificent coat.

That night he curled himself into a perfect fluffy circle on his favourite velvet cushion.

He purred contentedly.

Facts, he reflected, were merely optional data points.

Narrative control was everything.

"Hmph", he murmured sleepily.

"Tonight, the idiom."

"Tomorrow... the metaphor."

A very important message from Mrs Higgins: Words and sayings can sometimes mean something completely different from what they first sound like. It's always good to ask a grown-up if you're unsure what someone means, instead of worrying. And remember — cats are for cuddling and gentle play, never for silly spinning games.

Night night. Sleep tight.
