The Adventures of Reza Shadey

Reza Shadey, a fluffy Persian cat character from The Adventures of Reza Shadey bedtime stories

Story 188: Reza Shadey and the Nurdle Emergency Alert

Settle in comfortably, children. Let me share a tale concerning a tremendously arrogant, luxuriously fluffy Persian cat who found a baffling word in the morning press and instantly placed the entire Catford postcode on high alert.

Because to a strategic mastermind like Reza Shadey, any word he did not already know was clearly a highly classified code for an impending disaster.

It was a balmy August morning.

Mrs Higgins had propped the kitchen door ajar to let in the breeze, leaving her daily newspaper spread across the patio table, open to the environmental reports.

Reza Shadey — a Persian cat whose dark, espresso-coloured coat practically shimmered with unwarranted self-importance — was undertaking his daily media audit.

He bounded onto the table with the smooth precision of an executive entering a boardroom and began scanning the pages.

Most of it was the usual human waffle about global markets and politics, which lacked any direct relevance to his premium tuna supply.

Then, a single word caught his emerald eyes.

NURDLES.

Reza stopped dead.

His majestic tail stiffened into the shape of a lavatory brush.

"Nurdles..." he muttered.

He stared at the bold print.

The syllables felt entirely untrustworthy.

They sounded like a compromised breakfast cereal.

"This is not a drill", he whispered to a nearby ladybird. "This is a catastrophic security breach."

The ladybird, lacking any interest in corporate security, simply flew away.

Reza vaulted off the table and marched into the centre of the lawn.

"All stakeholders to the patio!" he yowled. "We face an unprecedented structural threat! Initiate lockdown protocols!"

Penelope arrived first, navigating the flowerbeds with the weary grace of a project manager who had survived many of Reza's manufactured crises.

"What is the matter now, Rezzi?" she sighed. "Have the pigeons staged a buyout?"

"Significantly worse", Reza replied darkly.

Ginger Tom lumbered out from beneath the rhododendron bush, his orange fur speckled with dry soil.

"This had better end with a snack", Tom grumbled. "I was heavily invested in a dream about a fishmonger."

A moment later, Tiger rocketed over the garden wall.

The tabby kitten hit the grass, performed a spectacular forward roll, and skidded to a halt beside a garden gnome.

"Reporting for duty, boss!" Tiger squeaked. "Are we doing a mission? Are the vibes hostile?!"

Reza hopped onto an overturned watering can.

"I have identified the most insidious threat ever to target this organisation."

Tiger gasped.

"Is it the vacuum cleaner? Did it learn to climb stairs?!"

"No."

"A rogue squirrel faction?"

"Worse."

Reza allowed the silence to build...

"Nurdles."

The garden went quiet.

Penelope raised one elegant white brow.

"Nurdles?"

"Correct", Reza confirmed.

Ginger Tom scratched his chin.

"What exactly is a nurdle when it's at home?"

Reza leaned forward.

"The human press is documenting a global invasion. They are small. They are spreading. They are appearing in oceans all over the world."

Tiger looked left and right.

"Are they... tiny ninjas?"

"That is the working hypothesis."

Reza nodded grimly.

"The newspaper refers to them as 'plastic pellets'. Classic misdirection. First, they disguise themselves as harmless manufacturing byproducts. Next, they will be demanding board seats and stealing our biscuits."

Penelope rolled her eyes.

"Rezzi, they are just tiny pieces of plastic pollution. They do not have plans. They do not even have brains."

"And that", Reza replied smoothly, "is exactly the sort of flawless cover story a mastermind would invent."

He stood tall.

"I shall orchestrate the resistance."

He pointed dramatically.

"Penelope, Head of Perimeter Defence. Ensure no suspicious spherical objects cross the property line."

Penelope looked at him.

"I am going to sit in the sun, Rezzi."

"Excellent passive surveillance."

"Ginger Tom, Asset Retrieval Division. Locate and detain any suspicious objects."

Tom yawned.

"Is there a bonus structure?"

"There will be equity in the reformed garden ecosystem."

"I'll take that as a no."

"Tiger! Kinetic Interceptor Force. If you spot a nurdle, apply overwhelming downward force."

Tiger saluted, wobbled, and fell over.

"Maximum squash protocol engaged!"

Within ten minutes, Reza had established the Nurdle Crisis Command Post.

It was an empty cardboard delivery box.

He sat inside it wearing a thoroughly rinsed strawberry yoghurt pot on his head.

"Effective immediately", he announced, "Catford is operating under a Code Red Nurdle Threat. All shiny, round, or suspicious items must be interrogated."

"Rezzi", Penelope called from her warm patch of sunshine, "why are you wearing dairy packaging?"

"It is a tactical crown. It deflects aerial espionage."

The lawn quickly dissolved into chaos.

Tiger pounced on anything even slightly circular.

A dandelion.

A forgotten marble.

A suspicious-looking pebble.

He even accidentally squashed Tom's tail.

"Watch it, you menace!" Tom complained.

"Friendly fire! The target was evasive!" Tiger cheered.

Eventually, Tom returned with evidence.

Two garden pebbles.

A dried lentil.

A shirt button.

And one actual plastic bead from a broken necklace.

"Suspects acquired, guv."

Reza inspected them carefully.

He tapped the plastic bead with one paw.

"Aha. A suspiciously spherical agent."

He pointed to a cracked terracotta plant pot.

"Maximum security."

The detention facility was ready.

Several minutes later, just as Reza was preparing a speech about supply chain security, a piercing noise shattered the peace.

WEEEEEEOOOOO!

WEEEEEEOOOOO!

Everyone froze.

Tiger's fur stood up.

"THE NURDLES ARE ATTACKING!"

"Calm yourself", Tom said, looking towards the kitchen. "The noise is coming from Mrs Higgins's phone."

The phone was flashing brightly on the counter, making the emergency alert sound.

Reza slowly turned his head.

His yoghurt pot tilted slightly.

"Magnificent."

Penelope frowned.

"What is magnificent about an alarm?"

Reza stepped out of his cardboard bunker.

"The government has registered our security initiative. They are broadcasting a nationwide alert to support our anti-nurdle operations."

Tiger gasped.

"You got the humans to help us?!"

"True leadership commands respect across all species."

Penelope sighed and checked the screen.

"Rezzi."

"Yes, my Chief of Defence?"

"This has absolutely nothing to do with plastic pellets."

"Impossible. My data was conclusive."

"It is an emergency weather alert. The extreme heat has created a serious wildfire risk, and everyone needs to be careful in the dry weather."

Reza blinked.

Mrs Higgins came outside holding her phone.

She looked at the cardboard box.

The detention plant pot.

And her magnificent Persian cat wearing a strawberry yoghurt pot like a helmet.

She laughed.

"Oh, Reza. What on earth are you defending us from today, my silly sausage?"

She removed the yoghurt pot.

"That was just a fire warning on the phone. With all this dry weather, we have to be careful."

Tiger looked disappointed.

"So... no plastic ninjas?"

"No, Tiger", Mrs Higgins smiled. "Just clever technology helping to keep everyone safe."

Reza sat silently.

The alert was about heat.

The nurdles were just pollution.

There was no invasion.

Everyone waited.

Then Reza lifted his chin.

"Flawless execution."

Penelope closed her eyes.

"Here we go."

Tom shook his head.

"You were completely wrong."

"I was running a dual-track threat simulation", Reza replied instantly. "While you were distracted by the nurdle scenario, I was evaluating your response times for a real emergency."

Tiger tilted his head.

"So the fake plastic spies were actually training?"

"Exactly."

Reza nodded.

"Thanks to me, everyone was prepared."

Penelope smiled.

"You genuinely thought the government was frightened of a bead."

"That is one perspective."

Reza looked proudly around the garden.

"The primary takeaway is that Shadey Operations remains the most prepared organisation in Greater London."

Mrs Higgins scooped him up.

"Come on inside, you ridiculous creature. It is far too hot for emergency operations. There is a cool spot on the kitchen tiles waiting for you."

As he was carried away, Reza called back:

"Maintain the perimeter! This is a strategic relocation to a climate-controlled facility! The threat matrix remains dynamic!"

Ginger Tom chuckled.

"Never a dull moment."

"Never", Penelope agreed.

Later that evening, after a generous portion of premium chicken pâté, Reza stretched out on the cool kitchen floor.

The cardboard bunker had been flattened.

The tactical yoghurt pot had been retired from active service.

The suspect lentil had returned to the soil.

But Reza's confidence remained completely untouched.

Penelope sat beside him.

"So, the great nurdle war is over?"

"The simulation was concluded with perfect marks."

"You made Tiger bounce on a dandelion."

"I sharpened his kinetic reflexes."

Penelope smiled.

"You are completely impossible to audit."

"I consider that a glowing performance review."

Reza closed his eyes.

Tomorrow, he decided, he would investigate another mysterious human invention: the emergency alert system.

He was fairly certain it contained a hidden compliment.

A very important message from Mrs Higgins:

When you hear a big, complicated word that sounds a bit scary, it is always best to ask a grown-up what it means instead of letting your imagination run wild.

And if you ever hear a loud emergency alert on a phone or radio, remember that it is there to help keep everybody safe. Listen carefully to the instructions, and never try to fight a wildfire with a yoghurt pot!

Night night. Sleep tight.
