Story 29: Reza Shadey's Magical Treasure Hunt

Snuggle down, kittens and cubs. Let me tell you how Reza Shadey went looking for treasure... and discovered a very important opportunity.

It all began one sunny morning in the garden. Reza Shadey was flicking his tail and sniffing under bushes when he spotted something curious peeking out from behind a rosebush. He tugged it free with his paw.

Rustle, crinkle!

It was a very old, very crinkly piece of paper. His emerald eyes sparkled.

"A highly suspicious document..." he murmured. "Possibly... a treasure map."

He straightened at once.

"Yes. This clearly indicates hidden assets. I, Reza Shadey, shall lead an immediate expedition."

He raced off to gather his team — his very important team.

Penelope, calm and sensible as ever.
Ginger Tom, already hoping there might be snacks.
And Tiger, who bounced as if powered by springs.

"Gather round!"Reza announced grandly. "A high-value adventure awaits, and I am in charge. Try to keep up."

They followed the map through the garden gate, past Tiger-Lily's favourite tree stump, over a wobbly little bridge, and down to the babbling brook.

Gurgle, gurgle! went the water.

Ginger Tom squinted at the map. "There's a riddle here", he said. "What is big and round, not a ball, and you can see it in the sky at night?"

Tiger tilted his head. "Er... a giant biscuit?"

Penelope smiled softly. "The moon, of course."

Reza nodded immediately.

"Yes, exactly", he said smoothly. "I was allowing you all the opportunity to contribute. Excellent work. Let's proceed."

They climbed a little hill and soon found a big tree with twisty roots. Something sparkled beneath it.

Tiger pounced. "Treasure?!"

Ginger Tom sniffed it. "Nope. Just Mrs Higgins' teaspoon. Looks like a magpie pinched it and dropped it here."

Reza examined it briefly.

"A modest asset", he decided. "We shall return it later to maintain positive relations with management. Forward!"

On they went — over stepping stones, through long grass, and around bushes — solving clues and giggling as they searched.

After a while, Reza slowed slightly.

He felt a strange flutter in his chest.

"I feel funny inside... but in a good way... we're very close to a successful discovery."

He lifted his chin.

"Yes. That must be it."

At last, the map led them to the oldest tree in the garden.

Penelope tapped the ground.

Thunk!

"A box", she said.

Tiger began digging at once, sending soil flying everywhere. Ginger Tom flipped the lid open.

Inside was... not gold. Not jewels. Not glittering treasure.

But something rather wonderful all the same.

Toy mice. Crunchy fish biscuits. And a glittery feather toy.

There was also a note.

To the cleverest cats: your treasure is friendship and fun!

Reza paused.

He looked at the toys.
He looked at his friends.
He hesitated, just for a moment.
He looked back at the biscuits.

"Hmm", he said thoughtfully. "Friendship and fun..."

He picked up a biscuit and crunched it.

"...clearly an undervalued asset", he concluded. "And these represent an excellent return on effort."

He gathered the treats with great importance.

"Good work, team. A successful mission. I shall, of course, oversee distribution of the rewards."

Despite this, everyone somehow ended up with a fair share.

They batted the feather toy, chased the mice, and crunched their biscuits in the warm sunshine, with happy purrs and swishing tails all around.

And when they trotted home, they returned Mrs Higgins' teaspoon.

She smiled as she took it back.

"Oh, you silly sausages", she said fondly. "Off on another adventure, were you?"

Reza lifted his head proudly.

"A highly successful one", he replied.

Mrs Higgins chuckled and gave him a gentle scratch behind the ears.

And in the golden quiet of the evening, the garden settled down once more.

Night night. Sleep tight.
