Story 76: Reza Shadey Goes to School
Okay, snuggle down tight, little ones. Let me tell you a tale about a very cheeky cat named Reza Shadey, and the time he went to school!
One sunny morning, there was a quiet tap-tap-tap at Mrs Higgins's door. When she opened it, there stood a little girl with bright, sparkly eyes and bouncy pigtails. It was Maisie from across the street, holding her mum's hand.
"Hello, Mrs Higgins!" said Maisie's mum, smiling warmly. "Maisie has 'show and tell' at pre-school today, and she was hoping... well, she was hoping she could borrow Reza?"
Maisie's eyes grew wide, and she looked up at Mrs Higgins. "Please, Mrs Higgins!" she whispered, her voice full of hope. "I want to show everyone Reza!"
Now, Reza Shadey, who had been lazily napping on a sunbeam in the living room, had perked his ears at the word "borrow". He yawned, stretched out his magnificent fluffy paws, and then sauntered over, tail swishing like a king's sceptre. He looked from Maisie to her mum, then back to Mrs Higgins. "Borrow me? For what trivial human endeavour could they possibly require the presence of the magnificent Reza Shadey?" he thought, puffing out his chest.
Mrs Higgins chuckled. "Well, Maisie, Reza is quite a special cat. Are you sure you can look after him?"
"Oh, yes!" said Maisie's mum quickly. "I'll be there the whole time, of course, to make sure Reza is perfectly safe and happy."
Reza overheard the mention of "school" and "show and tell". His ears swivelled, catching every word. "School? Humans go there to learn, but I, Reza Shadey, already know everything. Perhaps they require my superior intellect to enlighten their young minds! And", his eyes gleamed, "where there are young minds, there are usually snacks! This could be a most profitable venture."
Mrs Higgins thought for a moment, then smiled. "Alright, Maisie. But remember, Reza needs quiet time and gentle hands. No pulling his tail, and he gets easily bored. He also likes a little nap in a quiet spot."
A very important message from Mrs Higgins: It's wonderful to share our pets, but always make sure an adult is there to keep everyone safe, and that the pet is comfortable and happy in their new surroundings. Pets are not toys!
So, with a little persuasion (and the promise of an extra special treat later), Reza was gently placed in a sturdy pet carrier, which he found utterly demeaning. "A cage? For me, a prince among felines? This 'show and tell' had better involve salmon and a velvet cushion", he grumbled inwardly as Maisie's mum carried him towards the school.
The pre-school classroom was a riot of colour and tiny chairs. Children's drawings covered the walls, and a faint smell of juice and something wonderfully crumbly hung in the air. Reza's whiskers twitched. "Ah, the scent of opportunity!"
It was Maisie's turn. She beamed, carefully opening the carrier. Reza sauntered out, surveying the room as if he were inspecting his new kingdom. He noticed a table covered with colourful lunchboxes. "Excellent! A treasure trove awaits!"
Maisie, holding him gently, began her presentation, her voice clear and proud: "This is Reza Shadey. He's not just a cat — he's a Persian prince with the fluffiest tail ever! Reza lives with Mrs Higgins, but he thinks he's the boss. He once tried to start a midnight orchestra in the kitchen — with spoons and everything! Another time, he faked a limp to get more treats. He's very clever... but also very cheeky. Reza likes sardines, naps, and being important. I love him because he always gets into trouble — but in a funny way!"
The teacher, a kind lady with a big, friendly smile, clapped gently. Reza looked at her, then at the lunchboxes. "This human seems to think she's in charge. How quaint. Clearly, she knows nothing of true power, or of the exquisite joy of a purloined biscuit."
Just then, another little boy, Leo, shuffled forward, pulling a small, ventilated cage. Inside, two fluffy guinea pigs were wiggling their noses: one brown, one white. "Wheek! Wheek!" they squeaked softly.
"And this is Flopsy and Mopsy!" said Leo proudly. "They love carrots and lettuce!"
Reza's eyes narrowed. Guinea pigs! He observed them carefully. They were plump, seemed obsessed with food, and frankly, a bit simple-minded. "Aha! My new assistants! Small, furry, and easily manipulated. They are perfectly positioned to perform the 'dirty work' of reconnaissance and retrieval. I, Reza Shadey, shall be the mastermind!"
He watched as the teacher gently opened the guinea pig cage, placing a few lettuce leaves inside. Reza, with a flick of his tail and a mischievous glint in his eye, saw his chance. The teacher was distracted, praising Leo. Reza, ever the opportunist, decided it was time for his real show. With a quick, silent leap, he sprang from Maisie's arms, landing nimbly on the floor, right near the guinea pig cage. He gave a soft but firm "Meow!" to the guinea pigs, as if giving orders. "Right, you two! Operation Snacky Sneak is a go! Distract them! Make a dash for the good stuff!"
The teacher, seeing Reza's unexpected move, calmly said, "Everyone, please stay seated." She moved quietly to block the classroom door, while her assistant quickly and gently tried to guide Reza back towards Maisie.
But Reza had a mission! He darted under a small table, then made a dash for the guinea pig cage. He cleverly nudged the latch on the guinea pig cage with his nose. Click! The door swung open just a crack. Flopsy and Mopsy, seeing a new patch of floor and perhaps a stray crumb, timidly waddled out. "Wheek! Wheek!"
The children gasped. "The guinea pigs are out!" someone shouted.
"He's doing one of his adventures!" giggled Maisie, pointing at Reza, who was now subtly 'directing' the guinea pigs with his tail, nudging them towards the lunchbox table.
The teacher, trying to keep a straight face, chuckled. "Oh dear! It looks like Reza's started The Great Classroom Heist... with a little help!"
Flopsy and Mopsy, however, were more interested in a dropped piece of carrot near a bookshelf than the tempting lunchboxes. Reza watched in exasperation. "Useless, utterly useless! Clearly, their small brains cannot comprehend the genius of my master plan. I must take matters into my own paws!"
Just as Reza was about to make his own dash for the lunchboxes, Maisie's mum, with gentle but firm hands, managed to scoop him up. The teacher's assistant calmly gathered the two guinea pigs and returned them to their cage.
Once Reza was safely back in his carrier, the class took a moment to calm down. The teacher suggested they draw pictures of Reza's visit and the guinea pigs. Many children drew pictures of Reza near the guinea pigs, with little 'Meow!' and 'Wheek!' speech bubbles. Maisie drew Reza wearing a tiny crown and bossing the guinea pigs around.
Back at Mrs Higgins's house, Reza was given his promised treat. He munched it thoughtfully. "Show and tell was... enlightening. The security was laughably easy to bypass, but my 'assistants' proved to be utterly incompetent. Still, I entertained the masses with my cunning escape, and the admiring stares of the young humans were almost as good as sardines. Next time, I shall select my team more carefully. Or perhaps... I shall simply raid the staffroom myself. I hear they have biscuits."
And so, Reza Shadey, the Persian prince of mischief, settled down for a well-deserved nap, already dreaming of his next grand scheme for snacks and attention.
Night night. Sleep tight.
